Alright, the coolant on the gxp is at 5 years and 18k miles. From what I have gathered, this is not something that can be drain and fill but needs to be done with a machine to prevent air pockets. My only problem is, the Pontiac dealer that I trusted is obviously gone. I need some advice on a gm dealer in my area that I could trust. I contacted one but they don't have the machine to flush and fill, the other told me "we are a certified GM dealership" when I asked if they have ever worked on a LNF motor or GXP. I don't know if he knew what I was talking about or what. Any info would be great. Thanks.

I let a Cadillac (formerly also sold Pontiac) dealership replace the coolant. The dealership used suction to remove the old coolant so no power flushing (and no lifting of the vehicle) was involved. However, as I pulled out of the dealership driveway the coolant light came immediately on. Since the gas was very low I decided to run 1/4 mile to gas station and while there checked the coolant tank. The coolant was about half a quart low.

Drove back to the dealership. They apologized and took it back in immediately. About 15 minutes later I was called back and told it had been filled, test driven, and ready to go.

The explanation the tech gave me was that a cavitation method(?) is used for coolant refills, and suspected that air was being mixed in with the coolant during the refill procedure. Once the vehicle was driven the cavitation air was circulated into the overflow tank, causing the overflow tank coolant to be sucked into the coolant system which triggered the low coolant sensor light to come on.

In other words it was a fancy way of saying the coolant system was not checked for trapped air.

My advice is to take it to a larger Chevrolet store or a Cadillac store. The Chevy store only because the Cobalt SS and HHR SS both used our LNF motor. The Cadillac store because the new ATS has a derivative of our motor.
