Has anyone had problems with rips in the top at the edge where the window meets? On the rear drivers edge of the window on my GXP I noticed a rip in the seam - almost like someone sliced it down the middle.

What I realized tonight is that over the last couple of years (I have an '08) the window has been brushing the very spot with each door close and eventually wore through the fabric. You can see the mark where the window is still rubbing but not worn through - yet. Looking at the passenger side, that window does not rub so my thought is the top was just not installed square or it had warped out of shape with use.

Sorry, wish I would have taken pictures - my car is at the dealer waiting for them to take a look in the morning. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this as well as what the fix might be.

Thanks!

Actually just got a call back from the dealer - they are replacing the top (thankfully I'm still under warranty). Even though the rip is only about 2 inches long, there's not enough material at the edge in which to send it to a seam shop to fix.

Bad news is, there are no tops available in the distribution channel - it's going to take a few weeks to get it.

As for the Window rubbing and causing the tear, they said they will make an adjustment to the new top to keep it from rubbing and causing the same problem again. BTW; the symptom of wear is a white line in the fabric right at the point where the window crosses the threshold of the top.

This is a well understood problem that was addressed in threads a couple of years ago. There is probably nothing wrong with the top adjustment. The windows are adjustable for travel and cant. There is a procedure in the manual that shows the tech how to lower the window and change the cant - lean it outward or inward - so it does not come in contact with the top.

There are a number of other problems with the tops including

Early tops had plastic fittings that failed. They were replaced in a TO with metal fittings. This was also a running production change.

The hinge above the windows had some problems that caused some tops to fail. This was addressed in a couple of ways. One if I recall correctly was replacement of tops and the other was lubricating the hinge points on a regular basis.

Also, if the tension on the top is too loose, the "pin" that mates with the rubber just behind the door can miss the hole and the top will be missaligned as a result.

Had this problem on my first Solstice. Dealer had a fabric shop replace the piping trim and adjusted the window (driver's side). The window never hit the top (trim) again, but never closed properly either, and I always ended up with a damp seat whenever there was a heavy rain or I washed the car.
I'm on my second Solstice now, and I just lower the windows a tiny bit myself. They don't hit the top, and they don't leak, either. One of these days, I may try to adjust them myself.
I guess this car is just too difficult for GM dealers to fix and/or adjust properly.

Wow, thanks for the list, most helpful. Definitely will take the list with me to the dealer if anything to help them in finding what needs to be done to stop this from happening again.

If I have any say in the matter, I would rather them not adjust the window cant - my windows now don't leak and are very quiet. My inclination is to recommend they adjust "bow #4" and if that takes care of it.

Thanks again!
