Two piece prototype Collins and Aikman Dura hardtop

Starting a new thread here regarding this unique top i just acquired thanks to Choptop's FB link and some gentle prodding from 4501Safari (Richard).

Let start with the information from the seller.
-Seller's company specializes in liquidating industrial warehouse when companies go bankrupt.
-Around '08 or '09 they were contracted to liquidate 17 of the Collins and Aikman Factories. Two of those factories were known as Dura Convertible Top.
-Dura apparently had a "North" and a "South" plant.
-When they originally acquired this prototype two piece hard top it was on a functional mock up with electrical actuators that allowed it to be demonstrated as a functional hard top.

Guessing here:
I suppose Collins and Aikman being the softop manufacturer for GM for the convertible Kappa's make this not quite a genuine GM part, but I would assume a prototype they had put together to pitch to GM as an aftermarket option, or possibly an official GM option had it not all gone belly up with the loss of Pontiac and Saturn.
One of the tings that makes this hard top unique is that it is the only one i have seen (outside of Nankoo's one off artistry ones) that allow you to open the trunk with the top still on.

I just closed the deal with the seller and do not have it yet however i wanted to post all the photos i have on it as of this moment.

Feel free to ruminate and speculate below.

thats very close to how I wood of done the tops. now you can see way I told you to get that cheep white solstice that was neer you  :giggle:. how many did they make? are you getting the molds?
Im supprized they didnt liquidate that stuff years ago. if you are getting the molds, there are lots of fiberglass shops in socal that make tops, bodies, buggies replicas etc.and probably a few boat manufacture's too.
With a little modification/refinishing, It looks like it could possibly work without the trunk mounted section . Though I kinda wonder about that being a Targa Bar/hoop with the top removed .
Very interesting for sure.
Wow, very cool HH 😎 Glad it went to someone who appreciates the history of this top. It also appears to be a much more finished hardtop than what I was thinking it was especially the underside. Had this gone into production (depending on price) I'm sure I would have been a customer.

Crazy idea, but I have to wonder if it enough of them could be reproduced and sold to interested parties.

I asked Norm and he was not interested.
My thought was i could ship it to him and he could make a mold to make more.
I dont know of any other vendor that would be interested so let me know if y’all know someone.
I have about a week before it is going to ship…

There are no photos that i have been able to find of it assembled. I am also assuming that rear trunk mount bar would be left on. Could be cool like a targa bar with the top off.
If you look at the sides of the window in the photo of the inside you can see some levers which one assumes is how it clamps down.

No molds just whats in the pictures. Supposedly the parts for the finished functioning prototype is all that is left
This is awesome. I hope you get it sorted out, assembled and working. Truly one of a kind. Love these cars with a hardtop!

I wouldnt modify it. Its a one off and possibly a vague piece of Solstice history.
If i ever get rid of the car i would probably remove it and pass it on to another owner that would love and care for it.

i bet if enough people contacted Norm with interest he might change his mind about making a mold of this. Maybe.

Also, it looks to me like with very little work it could be made to fit on a Sky…

Absolutely on the dual application, and we know Sky people love this kind of stuff. ;) Not to mention a bunch of us Solstice people who know what's going to happen down the road with no tops available and NO hardtop option in the universe...

I don't know Norm's motivation but it maybe if enough of us showed a real interest and commitment to spend the money, he might actually make a modest profit. It appears to be a lot more simple to produce and mount than his "Coupe Top" (which I would never consider for many reasons) or the defunct Smoothline products of never ending fitment problems, for the new owner of a new or used Smoothline top. (Speaking from personal experience on that kept me from buying one)

I am willing to send Norm a letter of request and intent if HH so desires and welcome suggestions how we may handle the wording of such. I think this has potential!

Well done indeed.

Hey the worst he could say is no, but if people are interested now would be the time to let him know. I certainly like the idea of people getting what they want and Norm making money in the process.
Once i ship it out here and restore it i am not going to want to ship it out to florida. (correction, Norm's is in Indiana. Don't know why i keep thinking he is in Florida - Derp)
Y’all got a week or so to convince him, before it is ready for pickup (they are building a crate on the pallet for me)
Florida? You shipping it to me?:eek: Here's information on Norm...

Send cards and letter to:

There is always hope and not doing anything will always not get you anything.

Wanna know what would be bad ass. making the rear glass so it is easily removable. The glass would easily fit into the trunk just have to make a holder for it.

I also wonder how the arch piece would look on the car without the top on. would it make the car look like a targa top vehicle??? If it looks cool without the hard top maybe have a simple canvas top made for those emergency weather conditions. Something like the top for the Lotus Elise. Use clear vinyl for a rear window that could snap in to keep most of the water out of the car if caught in a rain storm.

Talk to Norm and if he is interested in making a mold of it have him fix any issues there are with it for letting him use it to make the mold. That is a good trade.
What a great save @HHGadget ! You sir are a hero for having bought this. Put me up for a Norm's replica, only condition I have is that it must be ready for June 19-14 2023... Now, how far is Norm's studio from Beckley WV? 😁
I know you’ve reached out to Norm, but are there any ethical, moral, legal issues in directly ”copying” someone else’s design and producing it. Probably no patent on the item, but I can see why Norm may be hesitant to produce something he didn’t create. The other side of it is volume. Would it be worth his while to make molds.
There currently are no hard top options for a GXP.

EDIT/Correction Norm emailed me today to say he actually does still make his coupe top for the solstice!

Smooth line is gone and Norm only ever made a few of his hardtops for the Solstice before discontinuing them.
i am sure the quantity demand would be low, however Norm makes his by hand and quantity has not been his thing.
Since this is a one off prototype from a long bankrupt company, legally i don't see an issue.

Heck i know Norm’s skill level is so high he probably doesn't even need it to make one..
And if he did, his would probably be better :)
