Wood Grain Dash Kits removal?

396 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  skyo
I recently bought 2006 Solstice, the car came with wood grain overlay on it and I'm more fan of modern material, not a classic car look.
Do you think I'll expect so much work to clean up the goo left over when it's removed?
Or should i keep it as the wood grain makes it better over original gray plastic dash?

It's not real wood of course, just 2~3mm thick vinyl material in good quality.

Skyo, mine came to me trimmed very well with a vinyl wood-grain appliqué. The bits on the door came off easily with warmth & care; but the boomerang sections are another matter. I removed one trim piece surrounding the shift lever, but it ruined the boomerang’s painted plastic finish. So I purchased a secondhand boomerang and am awaiting the time & space to swap them out.

Meaning: if the overlay was properly applied, it’ll be much work.

Easier / less effort to buy a replacement boomerang if the wood grain finish isn’t your thing. Send a PM to HoosierGXP; he often has spares.

Enjoy the ride, regardless!

If it is well installed with no issues, would some form of painting it work.

I do not recommend painting this material, Can you live with it? I have a thing for woodgrain dash, I must admit. Original looks fine but kinda boring.

I had the carbon fiber version of this kit on my car for a couple of years. Heat and panel tools

Thanks for all your suggestion! I'm slowly getting used to the wood grain dash. Instead, I need to remove the circular wood overlay around Pontiac emblem on steering wheel only.
There're more area to restore like clear coat scratch, misaligned bumper, cup holder, etc. Fun stuff!

Welcome Skyo - enjoy the ride!
Welcome. My previous owner had the boomerang dipped and it looks really good. Never seen another one like it.

The single best adhesive remover I have ever used is called Cumberland Products Inc CP-230. Its like 95% xylene or something and it will dissolve ANY adhesive. You can't buy this at a local car parts shop. I got some from a professional vinyl installer willing to sell it to me. It is - no lie - 5x better than Goo Gone. Paint safe, but NOT necessarily all plastic safe, so test it. If you can get some, you'll thank me.

This looks very nice. I think the wood look goes well with the light coloured dash. I think it doesn't mix well with the dark interior... however in your case with a sand coloured dash it looks so well integrated one could think it was an OEM option.

That's what I thought but was told early on that color variants on the boomerang were not a factory option. Whoever did it, did a great job as there is not a blemish anywhere.

I have to say, that dipped dash looks very nice. I like the way that dipped dashes kind of glow in sunlight.

I might remove the wood grain some time later. But, if anyone wants to swap the dash with wood grain one, let me know. I would definately up for the swap.
It looks like this kit, plus wood grain overlay even on stereo and steering wheel emblem.

I'm located in the lower mainland in BC, Canada.
