Regarding the SEMA article about C/F. This article holds very true, with the exception of off-shore manufactured carbon fiber and products that are made off-shore with said carbon fiber.
There is a definate shortage of U.S. made C/F as the few companies here can't keep up with the aerospace demand.
For a company (like ourselves) to manufacture a complete Solstice or Sky hood from a single piece of C/F would run $1500+ retail. This hood would have to be manufactured from a special ordered 80" bolt of material. And unless you are aerospace or have a current military contract in aerospace good luck getting that made.
A couple of years ago we had to stop manufacturing large full C/F hoods (like the Camaro and Corvette) because the military was not ordering 60" bolts. They predominately are now using 50" and even if you can get your hands on that size you pay a premium.
Also with regards to off-shore "carbon fiber" make sure that you are getting "carbon" fibers and not black dyed/colored "glass" fibers that look like traditional carbon fiber weave. Also you have to watch out for colored "Hybrid carbon fiber." The color (red, blue etc) is actually polyester weaved in with black glass fibers.
Just some info to keep the forum up to date.
