Does anyone know if I can tint my door windows in Chicago without getting a ticket? In other words is it legal?

Here is the answer I found on the web for the state of Illinois:

Q: I have a question about tinted windows. I have a problem with my eyes called photo phobic and need to have the front side window of my vehicle tinted. Is there a way to do that? I cannot find anyone who will tint the window. I checked Illinois vehicle code # 5/12 503(a) and was unable to find any kind of a solution. Where can I go to get help for a problem like mine? Will a doctor's excuse do? I really need your help in finding an answer to my problem.

A: The short answer to your question is no, you may not have the windows of your vehicle tinted even if you have a doctor's excuse.

However, a spokesman at Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's office said that if you were to purchase a car that already had a tinted driver's side window, you could drive it, but you must have a written order from your doctor.

He said the law that prohibits the tinting of the window adjacent to the driver's seat is Public Act 90-389. It was passed in 1998. He said that means your car would have to be older than a 1998 model for the tint to be legal.

He also said that same public act says that as of Jan. 1, 2008, the tint must be removed from all vehicles and will not be allowed even with a doctor's excuse.

So, the answer is NO for the driver's and passenger's windows......

Hey Crawdad, It's Gary...........well guess what? I got three tickets yesterday on my PT cruiser...one for no front plate, one for tint, one for a clear cover on my rear plate. I looked into the tint thing and I heard you CAN get a doctors excuse and also get a special plate, which has black letters instead of red, I plan on calling the Sec of State today, will post more info when I get it...............Gary

Not to hijack this thread, but it is good to hear from you, Gary! Sorry to hear about the tickets. The front plate thing is a law that I wish Illinois would change, but...... I think the tint thing has gone a little overboard, but it is what it is. Heck, why do I care about tinting? I want the top and windows DOWN whenever possible, so the tint would all be hid anyway!!

ok guys, check this out, I just got off the phone with the sec of state, and their IS a form you can have a doctor fill out (which I plan on doing) that will allow you to have tinted windows in IL. my excuse is I had cataracts removed and my eyes are light sensative. That will take care of that deal. as far as my front plate, here is my solution for that one..

I have had my windows tinted for 2 years now with no issues. I have also been pulled over a couple times and they said nothing.

It may have to do with the fact that only rear window is darkest tint. The driver and passenger windows are the next shade lighter. So I think you would probably be OK if you don't do the darkest tint.
